Fonseca 1966

Consumed: New Year's Eve.

Accompanied by: Cropwell Bishop stilton, pears, roaring fire.

Preceded by: roast pheasant, dauphinois, Fonbel Saint-Emilion.

Eye: rich and Clarety; pale brown edge; fairly opaque despite only a modest deposit; big legs.

Nose: large brandy hit, which relaxed after a while; stewed jammy fruits; hints of prunes; some smoky wood and tobacco as it opened up; some candied spice.

Mouth: Rich, smooth and full; strawberry and raspberry jams; some orange and apricot; a long finish.

Verdict: One of the all-time greats. If you can get some, drink it while it's still good.
